What to check when your address has changed

Keep current and previous address information consistent across an application, supporting records and lender correspondence.

Moving can leave several legitimate addresses in your records at once. A bank statement may show the old address while your identification and application show the new one. Treat this as a timeline to explain, not a reason to alter documents or erase accurate history.

Make a short address timeline

Write your current address, move-in date and previous address before starting the application. Include apartment numbers and the same street spelling used for reliable mail delivery. If the form asks for a longer history, provide the period requested rather than guessing dates to fill a gap.

Keep residential and mailing addresses distinct when they differ. A lender may need to know both. Ask how to enter a temporary address or a situation where you receive mail somewhere other than your residence.

Identify records that need updating

Update contact details directly with your bank and existing servicers through verified channels. Save the confirmation. A newly downloaded statement may still reflect the address recorded at the end of its statement period; do not edit the PDF to replace it.

If the lender requests proof of your current address, ask what documents it accepts and how recent they must be. One provider's accepted utility bill does not establish a universal rule for all lenders.

Review unfamiliar report information

A previous address on a credit report can be historical. An address you have never used warrants a closer look, especially if other account information is unfamiliar. The FTC's credit-report guidance explains why reviewing the actual reports helps identify inaccuracies and possible identity theft.

Record the bureau and the exact unfamiliar entry. Use the bureau's correction process when needed, keeping copies of relevant evidence. Do not pay someone who promises that deleting accurate addresses will guarantee approval.

Keep communications reachable

Confirm where application notices and the first payment information will go. Check your email address and phone number as well as postal details. A move often coincides with changing utilities, employers or banks, which makes missed messages easier.

Once the loan is established, verify the address in the servicing account. Updating a loan application, a bank account and postal forwarding are separate actions; completing one does not prove the others are current.

This guide provides general educational information, not an individual lending decision. Product terms and applicable rules vary. Use the actual loan documents and relevant primary sources for your situation.
