A loan website can collect a great deal of information before you see a firm offer. Checking who operates it belongs near the beginning of the process, before uploading a pay stub or entering a Social Security number. A polished application form is not evidence that its operator is authorized to offer the product in your state.
Start with the actual company name
Write down the legal business name, any trading name, physical address, website domain and telephone number. Look for the company that would make the loan, not just the name at the top of a comparison page. A broker, referral service and lender may play different roles. If the page says it will connect you with a network, find out which businesses receive the application and what consent you are being asked to give.
Keep those details together. Searching a company name from memory makes it easy to check a different business with a similar name. Save the exact spelling from the proposed agreement as well as the marketing name.
Match the record to the product and state
For payday lenders, the CFPB directs consumers to their state regulator or attorney general. Licensing requirements depend on the business and jurisdiction. A registration number printed in a footer does not establish that this website belongs to the registered business.
For mortgage companies and professionals, the CFPB identifies NMLS Consumer Access as a free checking resource. Read the relevant state and activity information rather than stopping at a matching name. If a record is unclear, ask the regulator what it means for the product you are considering.
Call through a separately verified route
Suppose an email claims to come from Example Lending and provides a license number. You find that number in an official record, but the record lists a different domain and telephone number. Do not resolve the discrepancy by asking the email sender whether the email is genuine. Use the independently obtained contact details to ask the real company whether it sent the message and operates the application page.
This check also helps with a recently changed website. A genuine explanation should be verifiable through a contact route that did not originate in the questionable message.
Make a small verification record
Record the date, official directory visited, matching details and any unanswered question. Do not include passwords or full account numbers in this note. A useful entry might say: legal name matches; state activity checked; application domain confirmed by the company’s published number.
Verification does not establish that a loan is affordable or attractively priced. After confirming the business, still compare the written cost, repayment schedule and conditions. If the identity check remains unresolved, pause the application before more information leaves your control.
