Borrowing for a major appliance: count the full cost

Compare appliance prices after delivery, installation and financing terms, then test the ongoing household cost.

A compact and modern kitchen with laundry appliances, featuring white cabinets and natural light.

A refrigerator or washing machine price tag may exclude the work needed to make it usable at home. Before financing, calculate the installed cost and check whether the credit offer changes that cost. The best monthly payment comparison starts with the same appliance and services in each option.

Define the required replacement

Measure the space, doorways and necessary connections. Confirm capacity and functions that the household actually needs. A larger model can create delivery or installation expenses without solving a more important problem.

If repair is possible, get a realistic diagnosis and price from a qualified provider. Compare the likely useful result and warranty terms, not just the repair bill against a new item's sticker price. Avoid assuming the old appliance will last a specific number of years after repair unless there is evidence for that estimate.

Build the installed total

In a hypothetical example, the appliance is $900, delivery $60, required installation parts $45 and old-unit removal $35. Before any applicable tax, the cost is $1,040. If $400 is already saved for the replacement, the remaining pre-tax gap is $640.

Ask which services are included and what conditions create extra charges. Stairs, disconnection work or an incompatible connection can matter. Keep optional service plans separate so their prices and coverage can be evaluated individually.

Read financing beyond the promotion

Record upfront fees, payment count, APR and total scheduled payments. Distinguish a true 0% promotional period from deferred-interest terms, which may have a different consequence if the balance is not repaid under the offer's conditions.

The CFPB's credit-card resources explain interest features that can apply to store credit. Use the specific offer to check whether the minimum payment actually clears the purchase before the promotion ends.

A hypothetical $1,200 balance due to be cleared within 12 monthly payment opportunities needs $100 a month before fees or other charges. If only 11 payment opportunities remain, the pace is about $109.10. Calendar timing matters as much as the headline number of months.

Compare ownership costs without promising savings

Use the appliance's published energy information and your utility price to estimate usage cost, with the assumptions labeled. Actual use, household size and local rates affect the result. Do not treat a sales claim about savings as cash guaranteed to fund the installment.

Check whether the old appliance's removal or a temporary alternative creates an immediate cost. For an essential failed item, waiting may involve laundromat trips or food-storage arrangements; for an optional upgrade, those costs may be zero.

Keep the purchase receipt, delivery checklist and financing agreement together. Inspect the delivered item and report damage through the seller's process promptly. A product problem and a credit obligation can involve separate procedures, so do not assume withholding a loan payment resolves the purchase dispute.
